STEP 2 - EVALUATE

Time to choose a project!

Students will now be choosing a plant that they would like to focus on for their project.

Teachers will guide their students to choose a question they would like to explore involving their plant. Refer back to ideas generated in the previous step on plants that grow in the local area and their uses.

Sample projects could be, but are not limited to:

- Which type of bean plant grows the fastest?

- Do organic vs. non-organic carrots taste different?

- Can a maple tree grow from maple keys?

Meanwhile, the class will engage in a SMART Learning sequence with the picture book, "The Curious Garden" by Peter Brown. This story is based on a real place in New York City where a spontaneous garden sprung up on an abandoned railroad track. Showered with love and tender care from a little boy, this garden flourishes in the story and shows students a bigger picture of what this space can mean.

Students will create an Observation Booklet to record their daily measurements and observations.
